not sure how much it will help when you have the 8gb version which imo is not enough but it should help. select custom then uncheck use gpu for image processing. Go to preferences and then to performance. To solve this kinda is to disable hardware acceleration or set it to to display only. on my desktop right with a RTX 3080 Ti gpu with 12gb of dedicated vram it uses all 12gb of vram. and being how m1 uses unified memory it shares the memory with sytstem ram so the vram is hogging up all the 8gb leaving system ram to be in swap. lightroom has a horrible issue with allocating way to much GPU vram. There is a known bug with lightroom and how the unified memory works. I also have a A7RIII and with this little trick your performance should be alot better but not sure by how much with only 8gb of ram I have a 16gb m1 macbook pro and lightroom classic uses a lot of ram and when you hit close to all your ram osx will start using swap memory and you'll start thrashing your SSD with writes. My Asus G15 laptop (16gb ram) has no problem with the same setup: LR classic, catalog and files on T7 SSD.Īll the reviews I'm seeing online seem to indicate that 8GB of RAM is enough on the m1 macs because of the "unified memory" thing. After switching between a few photos I may get a stutter here or there, and the occasional beachball after zooming in to 100%.īut if I try to use it like I a computer with multiple things going - browsers open, a chat app or two - and switch back and forth between those while editing - it runs like a computer from 1995.Īctivity Monitor shows LR is using 9GB of ram sometimes - I don't know how that's possible if the computer only has 8. If I close all major apps (Safari, Firefox, WhatsApp, Signal, Photos.) and only have Lightroom Classic open - it runs okay. Samsung 2TB T7 SSD, formatted to APFS - photos and catalog (~8000 photos) on this drive MacBook Air 8GB, 256GB storage, M1 chip - Lightroom Classic (Apple silicon/m1 native version) Seems like most people are having great results with the base macbook air, with 8gb of RAM.
